Election denier and Tea Party Patriots founder Jenny Beth Martin — whose group sponsored a pre-insurrection rally in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021 — appeared with right-wing media host Steve Bannon and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk this week to discuss her group’s strategy ahead of the 2024 election. During her interviews, Martin claimed that her group is working with election denier and Trump-allied lawyer Cleta Mitchell’s activist group and training thousands of poll workers.
During the January 29 edition of The Charlie Kirk Show, Martin told Kirk that Tea Party Patriots is working alongside Mitchell’s Election Integrity Network, a group of right-wing, election-denying activists who “monitor elections” for alleged fraud.
“In Georgia and other states around the county we’ve been working very closely with Cleta Mitchell’s organization, Election Integrity Network, building election integrity task forces in the states that had the most trouble around the country,” Martin told Kirk. “Those groups are looking at how to clean the voter roles, they’re making sure that poll watchers are recruited and trained, they’re deploying poll workers, making sure people go work the polls.”
Cleaning voter rolls is an “often-flawed” process of deleting the names of ineligible voters in specific elections from registration lists, which the Brennan Center for Justice notes has the potential to “disenfranchise legitimate voters.”
Martin appeared alongside Bannon and Kirk at Turning Point USA’s Restoring National Confidence conference, an event held to counter the Republican National Committee’s annual winter meeting. Both events are currently occurring in Las Vegas. Turning Point’s decision to host an opposing event comes as RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel faces scrutiny from far-right and anti-establishment figures, including both Bannon and Kirk. Kirk and Turning Point USA are also under pressure from reporting on questionable spending at the organization and criticism of Kirk’s antisemitism.
The next day, during an interview with Bannon, Martin bragged about the amount of poll watchers her group has trained in recent years.
“When it comes to securing the election, we’re in a much better position right now in 2020 — I mean in 2024 than we were in 2020, way better,” Martin said. “In 2022, we trained 20,000 people who went on to be part of the 80,000 people that the RNC placed as poll watchers. That is massive.”
The right-wing organizing and poll watcher recruiting that Martin described have previously led to widespread voter intimidation.
Later in the interview, Martin explained that her group has partnered with Kirk and Turning Point Action’s Tyler Bowyer to create an app for “relational organizing,” to get out the vote to family and friends.
Bowyer has previously pushed election fraud conspiracy theories and acted as one of former President Donald Trump’s fake electors from Arizona during his push to overturn the 2020 election results.
