Media Matters searched transcripts in the SnapStream video database for all original episodes of ABC’s Good Morning America and World News Tonight, CBS’ Mornings and Evening News, and NBC’s Today and Nightly News for any of the terms “Trump,” “former president,” or “then president” within close proximity of any of the terms “abortion,” “roe,” “wade,” or “win elections” from January 11, 2024, the day after Trump talked about abortion at a Fox News town hall event, through January 12, 2024.
We also searched print news articles in the Factiva and Nexis databases from the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post for any of the terms “Trump,” “former president,” or “then president” within the same articles as any of the terms “abortion,” “roe,” “wade,” or “win elections” from January 11, 2024, through January 12, 2024.
We timed segments, which we defined as instances when Trump's abortion comments at the Fox News town hall were the stated topic of discussion or when we found significant discussion of the comments. We defined significant discussion as instances when two or more speakers in a multitopic segment discussed the comments with one another.
We also timed mentions, which we defined as instances when a single speaker mentioned the comments without another speaker in the segment engaging with the comment, and teasers, which we defined as instances when the anchor or host promoted a segment about the comments scheduled to air later in the broadcast.
We also included print news articles, which we defined as instances when Trump's abortion comments were mentioned anywhere in text in the A section of the paper. We did not include editorial, op-eds, or letters-to-the-editor.
