Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump and a highly paid official in his reelection campaign, made her debut as a Fox News contributor on Monday during one of her already frequent appearances on the network.

Trump thus becomes the latest example of the revolving door between Fox News and Republican political campaigns — and she might yet revolve out again as she is also considering a run for U.S. Senate from her native state of North Carolina. As such, she might follow in the footsteps of former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is now running for governor of Arkansas after a continued period of promoting herself on Fox News.

In hiring her, Fox is further legitimizing somebody who pushed the Big Lie about the presidential election — which the network also promoted heavily — and culminated in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters who attempted to stop the transition of power to President Joe Biden.

Lara Trump has promoted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election

One of the most persistent conspiracy theories pushed by Donald Trump and his supporters was one alleging that voting machines company Dominion Voting Systems had altered vote totals on a massive scale, switching them from Trump to Biden. Dominion is now suing Fox News for $1.6 billion over its role in promoting these notions — and Fox’s newest contributor played her own small role in this, too.

On November 13, Lara Trump tweeted a video claiming that Dominion voting machines could be hacked in order to mark new votes upon a ballot after the voter would have already fed it into the machine.

She also promoted another debunked theory that popped up — pushed heavily by Fox — claiming that security camera footage in Fulton County, Georgia, had shown election workers clandestinely bringing ballots from underneath a table to then stuff into the scanning machines.

By the time Lara Trump tweeted this theory, Georgia state officials had already made clear that nothing improper had gone on in the video.

She then continued to promote the supposed suitcase scandal, on both a December 4 episode Hannity and a December 5 episode of Justice with Judge Jeanine.

Lara Trump insisted Trump would still be president

• “Well, look, we are still pushing forward from the campaign perspective. We believe Donald Trump won this election. And we still have legal challenges out in several states.” [Fox & Friends, 11/22/20]

Lara Trump claimed that millions of people “will always think” Trump won the election

Lara Trump refused to believe that 81 million people voted for Biden

• “I think people have a hard time rationalizing, Brian, how is it that a guy like Joe Biden, who throughout the course of his campaign could barely scrape together a dozen people at an event, all of a sudden got 80 million people so inspired that they came out to vote for him?” [Fox & Friends, 11/25/20]
• “We believe that Donald Trump legitimately won this election. He got 11 million more votes, Martha, in this election than he did in 2016. I think people find it absolutely ridiculous to think that Joe Biden, who could barely get people out to his campaign events, could get 80 million votes.” [The Story with Martha MacCallum, 11/30/20]

She also said “they threw away” Trump votes

In the months after the election, a number of Trump supporters such as MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and Goya Foods CEO Bob Unanue spread conspiracy theories that Trump had received much more than the officially recorded total of over 74 million votes — instead receiving something more like 80 million votes, but which was then altered via computer systems.

And on the November 25 edition of Fox & Friends, Lara Trump alluded to similar ideas: “We know that there were 74 million people that we at least know of — I think it's probably even bigger than that — that came out to vote for Donald Trump. But people feel like something is really off with this election, which is why we are saying we want every legal vote counted. We are continuing to push forward and make sure that that happens.”

And even after Biden was sworn in, she said on the February 4 edition of Hannity: “What the American people care about, Sean, is exactly what you saw from Donald Trump. He is the reason why he is so beloved by so many in this country, why he got a record of 75 million people to come out and vote for him, probably more in account of the votes they threw away and this past election.”

Lara Trump said the governor of Georgia “owed” it to Trump to switch his state’s votes

In early December, Trump called Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, demanding that Kemp convene a special session of the state legislature to overturn the election result. Fox News had also promoted the scheme to have Republican state legislatures throw out their elections and instead appoint special Electoral College delegate slates for Trump — in place of their state’s actual voters — though in the end no state attempted such a thing.

That night, Lara Trump appeared with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, with the two of them agreeing that Kemp had a political obligation to Trump to intervene in the presidential election, after Trump had endorsed Kemp in his own Republican primary two years earlier.

Lara Trump said Trump’s Supreme Court picks could rule on “beautifully-written” bogus Texas lawsuit

In early December, Fox News heavily promoted a frivolous lawsuit by Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and supported by other Republican state attorneys general, in which Texas sued four swing states that Biden won in an attempt to have the U.S. Supreme Court overturn those results. During a December 9 appearance on Hannity, Lara Trump declared that it was “actually a beautifully-written argument there by the state of Texas.”

Fox host Sean Hannity then ran down the list of conservative Supreme Court justices, including the three appointed by Trump — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett — and commented that the case “highlights the importance of those three seats that were filled by the president.”

Lara Trump commented further:

The Supreme Court unanimously rejected Texas’ demands, leaving the four swing states’ election results to stand.

Lara Trump wanted Congress to throw out the election

• “The date of ultimate significance, I think, as you just pointed out, Pete, is January 6th. That's when Congress meets to certify this election. And, look, I think that there are going to be people who say we do not agree with Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. We believe that Donald Trump won this election,’ and that is their right.” [Fox & Friends, 11/22/20]

Lara Trump and the unconstitutional “Pence Card”

In the days leading up to the joint session of Congress, Donald Trump had incorrectly asserted that Vice President Mike Pence had the unilateral power to reject Electoral College votes at the joint session of Congress on January 6. The night of January 5, Lara Trump told Fox anchor Martha MacCallum that her father-in-law “expects that the vice president will make sure that it was a free and fair election.”

In a further dialogue, she seemed to both say that this simply meant that Pence would allow Republican members of Congress to lodge objections under the established process — but also that Pence had some particular duty of being “tasked via the Constitution with making sure, again, that our elections are free and fair.” 

After Pence did not “come through” on Trump’s demand, the lame-duck president tweeted — while his supporters were storming the Capitol — that Pence “didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done.” During the siege of the Capitol, Trump’s supporters were seen chanting, “Hang Mike Pence.”
