The post Musk agreed with echoes the antisemitic “great replacement” conspiracy theory. The conspiracy theory, which falsely claims that Jewish people are helping minorities take over the United States, motivated the Tree of Life shooter in Pittsburgh who killed 11 people at a Jewish synagogue in 2018. Musk has previously engaged with antisemitic figures and amplified conspiracy theories that the far right uses to push antisemitism. That includes boosting an anti-ADL campaign from an antisemitic YouTuber and claiming that Jewish philanthropist George Soros “wants open borders” and “hates humanity.” [Media Matters, 9/8/23]

Musk has reinstated numerous white nationalists and antisemites on X, and even shared ad revenue with some of them. Under Musk’s ownership, X has reinstated numerous far-right figures previously banned from the platform, including accounts of known white nationalists and antisemites. Some of these far-right figures have made money from the platform’s ad revenue sharing program for X Premium users, including a pro-Hitler and Holocaust denier account that said it was paid $3,000. White nationalist Nick Fuentes: Musk is agreeing with “what we were saying in Charlottesville.” On his show, Fuentes claimed that the post Musk agreed with is “what we were saying in Charlottesville. This is like when the Charlottesville marchers said, ‘Jews will not replace us,’ that’s like a summary of that,” referring to the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Fuentes then said there was “good parts” in what Musk wrote and said, “This is the richest man in the world, and one of the top Twitter users with 160 million followers, casually drawing a link between Jewish influence and anti-white hatred,” calling it evidence that the conspiracy theory is going “mainstream.” From a ban evasion account on X, Fuentes also wrote “wow” in response to Musk’s post. Gab CEO Andrew Torba: Musk’s post is evidence in part that “Jews are the ones pushing anti-white hatred” and of “how far the Overton Window has shifted to the right.” Torba — a known white nationalist and antisemite and the CEO of the social media platform used by the Tree of Life shooter — cheered on Musk, posting a meme hyping the X owner for suggesting that “Jews are the ones pushing anti-white hatred.” He also seemingly credited Musk’s post as evidence that “those people on Gab and 4chan were right this entire time,” showing “just how far the Overton Window has shifted to the right in the past 24 hours. Far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones: Musk’s post is “the truth.” Jones said, “Was it antisemitic to say so many liberal Jews — the majority of Jews are liberal, in statistics — want to open borders up and bring in all these Muslims and want to bring refugees here but then Israel doesn’t want them,” adding, “That’s antisemitic? 4chan users: Musk is “ourguy” and has “awaken[ed] to the Juden menace.” A user on 4chan’s far-right “politically incorrect” message board known as “/pol/” wrote that Musk “just straight-up named them.
